Garment construction is the essential practical skill that connects design and pattern making to a finished wearable garment. OGIFT's Art of Garment Foundation course is a 1-month Express Mastery programme that teaches the complete garment construction process — from setting up and maintaining a sewing machine through fabric cutting, seam construction, finishing techniques, and the assembly of complete garment pieces. The course is taught in OGIFT's fully equipped sewing ateliers in Vinayakanagar, Bengaluru, with dedicated machines and cutting tables for each student, and faculty who bring industry experience from garment manufacturing and fashion design studios.
The course is structured as a progressive build from individual skills to complete garment assembly. In the first module, students learn sewing machine operation and maintenance — threading, tension adjustment, stitch selection, and basic troubleshooting. The second module covers fabric preparation — understanding grain lines, pattern layout on fabric, cutting techniques for different fabric types, and the critical pre-stitching steps that determine the quality of the finished garment. The third and fourth modules cover construction in detail: seam types and their appropriate uses, seam finishes for different fabric types, dart stitching, zipper and button insertion, hem finishing, and collar and sleeve attachment techniques. The final module brings everything together in the assembly of a complete garment — a blouse or kurta — from fabric to finished product.
The Art of Garment Foundation course is designed for beginners who want a strong, structured introduction to garment construction — students with no prior sewing experience who want to enter the fashion industry, homemakers who want to develop professional-level sewing skills, and anyone who wants to understand how garments are made before progressing to pattern making or design courses.
