Children's wear is a distinct and specialised segment of the Indian fashion industry — with its own sizing systems, construction considerations, safety requirements, and design sensibility. OGIFT's Kids Clothing Pattern Making course is a 1-month Express Mastery programme that teaches the complete skill set for drafting and constructing patterns for children's garments, covering the key garment types that are most in demand in India's children's wear market. Children's pattern making differs from adult pattern making in several important ways. Children's proportions change significantly across age groups — a toddler's proportions are completely different from a 10-year-old's, which are different again from a teenager's — and pattern makers must understand how to adjust construction for each age category. Growth allowances are critical in children's wear: garments need to be constructed with room for the child to grow without looking oversized. Safety is paramount — fastenings, embellishments, and structural elements that might be hazardous for children require specific construction approaches. The course covers all five key children's garment types at OGIFT: the A-line frock, the gathered frock, the umbrella frock, the layered skirt, and the jabla (infant's wear). For each garment, students draft the pattern, adjust for size ranges from 1 year to 12 years, and stitch a sample garment to test the fit.
Children's wear pattern makers are in high demand at garment manufacturers supplying major children's retail brands, at boutiques and tailoring studios that produce bespoke children's wear, and at children's fashion brands that are growing rapidly in India's expanding children's wear market.
